Wish Me Luck!

So I woke this morning feeling a bit cranky, noticed it yesterday too but it was clearly worse this morning. I was getting even more angry at what I perceived as irrational behavior on my part. I hate that crap...the whole being pissy for no reason thing but here I was trying to enjoy my don't-have-to-be-at-work-until-late morning and I was steaming. I read a couple blogs, those really set me off, the crap selection on television was enfuriating me, my morning emails left me feeling less than fulfilled and I got on a tirade about feeling like no one gave a rat's ass. It was out of left field, out of character and absolutely stupid.

The longer I sat the worse I felt and that was when it hit me, I'm not in a bad mood.....I feel like crap. Went to splash some cold water on my face and that was when I noticed how red my cheeks were...oh, oh no, dammit....I'm getting sick. I tried to eat, nothing tasted good. Tried sipping tea which just made me hotter and started the shivers. It was amazing, it was like the second I admitted to myself that I was sick, well the cranky went away and was replaced with a sore throat and slow dull ache in my head. Yay.

I called, (read texted) work and let them know I would be a couple hours late. Why not take the day off you ask? Um, yeah so guess who has to lead a tasting, a Champgane tasting with a throat that feels like I swallowed fire....goddamn it. Not sure what I am more pissed off about; being sick or not being able to enjoy my little grower bubbles. Okay just thinking about that is bringing the cranky back a little....

Wish me luck kids
Might need it...

My Gorgeous Samantha,

Sounds to me like you've got LAKER FEVER!!

I'm so sorry you're ill, My Love, and also sorry if I contributed to your malaise this morning. My blog tends to make a lot of people sick. I just hope you weren't feeling like I don't give a rat's ass.

Perhaps the Champagne will cure your ills. I hope so. Now I'm worried about you. Take care of yourself, Gorgeous, I need you.

I love you!

Your HoseMaster

Ron Love,
I do gots me some Laker fever but sadly I am also suffering with the other less fun, sweaty, red-faced kind. And you know your blog is one of the ones I adore, twas not you that got me going this morning and truth be told I think the "yuck" was just starting to take over. Oh and you sweet thing you...I always know that you give a rat's ass....again the "yuck" was affecting my brain. I get way more than my fair share of adoration, just being a baby is all. Thank you again for the lovely surprise that was waiting for me at work today...you are simply the best and I love you so.

AnotherdayofCrazy,
Working on it love and really hoping that it leaves as quickly as it rolled in on me. Thanks for the well wishes!

Oh my, I have not checked in until now, and it may be too late to help you before tonight's tasting.

The best cure is chicken soup. You know, chicken soup. You take a chicken and cook it until all the flavor has left the chicken and now resides in the water. We call that soup. It helps to cook the chicken with some onion and carrot, and don't forget the salt. My two grandmothers made this soup entirely differently. My father's mother produced a rich, satisfying broth in which also lived funny-looking things like Matzoh balls, kreplach and noodles, plus pieces of chicken and even bits of potato whosure starch served to make this whole thing into a stew-like potion of amazing flavors and an even more amazing ability to cure the common cold. It is this chicken soup to which I refer when I recommend chicken soup to you.

Now, to be sure, I loved my mother's mother without reservation. She may not have had the incredible sense of humor that my father's mother shared with me increasingly as we both got older. No, this women with no sense of humor was a fine artist and a great intellect--the perfect mate to her husband who taught me chess, difficult and fun math problems, took me to museums in New York and Boston.

Sadly, she could not cook. And so I warn you against thin, watery stuff that masquerades as chicken soup but is nothing more than murky hot water with a burnt out carrot that has lost all flavor but somehow has not given it up to the so-called soup.

I am sorry I cannot send you my grandmother, either one of them for that matter, but for now, my father's mother. Hopefully you can find a reasonable facsimile somewhere. It is guaranteed to cure my colds. I think it would probably work for you as well.

Pastis Daddy,
Sadly this came to me far too late to cure me before my event but you did help me, now I am hungry as hell! Your grandmother's soup sounds sublime and this is coming from someone that makes a kickass chicken soup herself. My trick is to brown the whole chicken first, then add the carrot, onion and celery with a good handful of salt. Let them get a wee bit brown as well and then deglaze the pot with a mixture of soy sauce and stock, being sure to scrape up any bits of skin or veggie from the bottom of the pan before adding stock and water. Let the whole thing simmer away for an hour and a half before removing all the solid bits...cool and pick the chicken, strain the soup, add more veggies if wanted/needed and cook to soften a bit. Return to a boil, add pasta, almost always shells and serve tossing bits of chicken and shaved Parm on the top. Um, yeah...like I said, starving now!

Love your description... "little grower bubbles".

Hope you are feeling better. Here's a nasty recipe for chicken soup that I threaten to feed my family when they are sick. It works.

1 chicken
Peel: 3 large onions, 1 sweet potato, 3 parsnips, 2 turnips, 12 carrots. Put chicken and root veggies in pot and add water to cover. Simmer 1 hour.

Add 6 celery and 1 bunch parsley simmer 90 min.

Remove the chicken (reserve for another purpose). Drain the vegetables into a colander saving all the broth. In a food processor, puree the vegetables and return the puree to the broth.

Chris,
I am feeling a bunch better this morning, least so far and that's good enough for me! Thank you so much for the recipe, this is freaking cool....everyone sharing their cure with me. You are very sweet, you are all very sweet. Thank you so much!

Not to be a pest, but the trick to making good chicken broth is to NOT use the whole chicken, just the remnants after you have cooked and eaten the chicken--them bones and such.

You put the bones and such into a pot of water and you let simmer for six hours, with no cover on the pot (topping up with water every so often, of course). That way, you have jars of concentrated stock in the freezer so that you can make a quick chicken soup whenever.

Oh, when you do make the soup, instead of celery, try fennel.
