Wonder if "Fluery" is some sub-region of Fleurie and if Georges Dubouef is any relation to the Gallo of Beaujolais....the one that makes those banana flavored (or used to) Beaujolais, Georges Duboeuf?

  2. Jeez you guys are tight! This is McInerney at his best - shallow and unobtrusive. And you expect research and editing from a Murdoch property? Too much.

    And Sam? You have done me a "made you look." Harsh treatment from a friend. And that you and Hardy and Josh all took the time to comment on that brilliant bit - shame. Without your attention McInerney's "writing" would remain in unregarded irrelevance.

  4. McInerny's so-called wine columns epitomize, to me, what's wrong with our celebrity culture.

    He is a fine example of both the depth and clarity of a mud puddle. But then, Murdoch and his clan like mud--a lot.

    WSJ has long been a hotbed of lousy wine writing. Duller than reading long lists of stock quotes.

    Jay McInerny is a novelist, but a poor one. I read one of his novels years ago and it read like it had been written by committee, two of whom spoke English. When they hired him at WSJ I laughed, but only because I haven't read WSJ's wine reporting in five years. And he's perfect for WSJ--successful, bland and completely uninterested in anything but his own fame.

    But I do have one question. What the hell is John Kelly doing reading Hardy and Josh? That really depressed me.

    The thing that kills me is the masses will take his word over most others, (like mine) because he is the "print media". Just pisses me off like no other.

    I don't know what a Josh is but John Kelly was talking about the fact that we posted a comment on that piece, (that steaming piece). The part that got me was how many bloggers were all pantie twisted but then posted comments anonymously, seemed like a pussy move so I posted something using my name. Not terribly concerned that the douche that wrote that won't like me...

    However, for sloppy research and unmitigated poor writing, I recommend my own blog over WSJ every day of the week.

  8. When the WSJ dumped John and Dottie and hired Lettie and Jay, you knew that deep, thoughtful winewriting was never in the cards. D & J may not have been brilliant analysts but they did like wine and they treated it with respect.

    A high school kid could have written the Jay piece, and would at least have had the spelling correct. On the other hand, the more bad wine journalism in the world, the more I like it. Less competition for those of us who are serious students.

    That piece does indeed look as if a child did it and as I said before, it drives me insane that a large group of people see him as an expert which clearly he is not. Working retail we see it all the time, people come in with like Food & Wine magazine pointing to the wines there and telling us that we should be reading/carrying those wines as the "experts" really like it....argh! I rarely point out another person's errors but this was just so fucking glaring that I could not just let it pass. I appreciate you taking the time to say something, you know as an expert that is truly just that. I adore you.

    You and I have talked about this before and it took me years to truly appreciate Gamay, years. Once you can love it for what it is rather than hate if for what its not, well then it is a delicious and fun little wine that is remarkably food friendly. So yay to Rachel for joining the club.
