It's About Time

This, “Promotion” has always been BS, every other retailer on the planet knows it. There is no way any retailer is going to give away wine for a nickel. We all knew it but there was little we could do or say about it, just like there is little we can say about the fact that they post “scores” from a man that is a consultant for the company….he better give it a 90, he told you to buy 80 cases of it, ugh. I mean we would all sound like a bunch of whinny bitches if we ranted and pointed our fingers each time this, very misleading promotion started running their commercials.

So when one of our reps came in and told us that our, Wine of the Month, (Line 39 Cabernet Sauvignon) that we sell for $7.99 was part of the BevMo, “Nickel Sale” we just kind of shrugged, but when he told us they were selling it for $15.99, (Now he told us it was $18.99 but when I checked their website it said $15.99…dunno if something changed or he just had it wrong) well, that just pissed us off. Now I know the onus is ultimately on the consumer to find the best price on whatever it is they are looking to purchase, but I have always seen the BevMo 5 Cent Sale as a rather disgusting display of a company taking advantage of people that don’t know any better….and frankly I think that is something that they should be thumped for.

So now BevMo is being sued…I think that is a giant waste of tax payer time and money but I do think it was about time that this bullshit “deal” was brought to light and people finally see that they were basically being taken advantage of. Yet another reason to support your local retailer, the little guy that is truly committed to finding you the best wine, at the best price and needs your return business to continue to do so.

  1. Way to keep it real. Good rant, Sam!

No matter what city I go to the big boys always provide the least (or poorest) customer service. In Chicago I was in Binny's & didn't get so much as a "hello". Across town at Sam's (before they were bought out by Binny's), I ended up answering questions for other customers & helping them pick stuff out. Its kind of ridiculous, you know?

  2. Absolutely. I avoid Bev Mo for many reasons. I have entered the automatic doors once with a friend only to be driven out by bad music, strange arrangements of candies and confections, stacks and stacks of nip bottles of all flavors and a lack of knowledgeable staff.
I asked the checker if they could direct me toward their favorite wine and was told, and I quote, "I don't really like wine that much, but I do like this pinto noir on this aisle." Yes, she said PINTO, like the bean. Hilarious. (I think the girl was all of 21 years old.) Thanks BevMo employee for providing me with that sound bite. I think I'll stick with wine country.

  3. I can't believe so many people passed this issue over yesterday. It seems that many consumers are really riled up by it (if I may...):

  4. Michael,
Thanks dude. That thing has always burned my ass, just glad that people are going to see what a scam it is. I had the same thing happen to me at Sam's by the way, service was nonexistent and I ended up selling a couple bottles of Bourgogne Blanc for them...ugh.

    Joy,
Welcome! I've been in a couple times and just find the foods and the wines so freaking boring, nothing there I want to put in my mouth. Thank you so much for supporting The Wine Country and for reading.

    Arthur,
Thanks for that, glad people are pissed...they should be.

  5. My Gorgeous Samantha,

Deceptive practices in the wine business!! I'm shocked, shocked, to learn of this. Misleading shelf talkers, 90+ points on every wine from someone or other (reminiscent of positive blurbs on every piece of crap movie), sales that aren't really sales! I had no idea. Oh, the inhumanity!

I used to love BevMo, though I like his brother BevCurley better, but now I'm finished going to their five cent sale. Why, it's just so dishonest, so Wong-headed, so typical.

Is no one concerned about the distributors and wineries that play along with this charade? BevMo does what any big corporation will do given the chance, use deceptive marketing to sell its product. So sue them.

    I love you, Gorgeous Samantha

  6. Ron My Love,
Sure those of in the business know all about the shady doings but the average consumer does not, and I just think the BevMo scam needed to be exposed and they should be seen for what they are, (and you rightly pointed out) a big corporation...not the "Value Dealer" they make themselves out to be. Should the wineries and distributors be called out too, sure but that should pan out on our end. We all want to make money but the smarmy way that company goes about killing the little guy with their perceived, "big box store" deals just chaps my hide. I was never shocked by their deceptive shit, I knew what was going on but I am pretty sure that there were a lot of people that didn't...I give a shit, sue me.

  7. I want to defend BevMo. BevMo needs defending here.

So, here goes. BevMo is not all that bad.

OK, I have done it. Now, back to pilloring Robert Parker and waiting for more nude wine pics on Hosemaster and here.

  8. PuffDaddy,
They are not all bad, this one thing is pretty shady though...and I think their French wine selections are boring as shit. Oh, oh...how about a naked photo OF The HoseMaster?! You take it, I'll post it
