Um, Boo

Wine lovers, please be warned that Zicam has been found to kill your sence of smell...sent straight from the devil to destroy your wine pleasure. Just say "No" to nasal murder. Makes me wonder, "Does Robert Parker suffer from allergies?"

  1. Ha! Very very funny. I don't think we have to worry. Parker's sense of smell was already destroyed by his dog's noxious gas.

  2. I read that article, and it freaked me out. I used Zicam last fall when I had a cold. Not getting near the stuff again!

  3. I've used it before as well. Lucky to have such a resilient schnoz, I suppose.

  6. I understand that Zicam producer Matrixx (?) has been involved in previous lawsuits over its product.

Here are some questions I have:

The combined prevalence of anosmia and hyposmia is something like 2% of the population.

I am curious to know how many cases of Zicam-associated anosmia have been reported since the product's introduction and what portion of Zicam users this represents.

If this proportion is greater than the annual incidence of new anosmia in people who don't use Zicam, then Zicam is clearly implicated as causative.

If the incidence is in the same range, I would wonder whether Zicam was causative or if these people would have developed anosmia as a result of the viral infection they were trying to cure (ie - would these people would have developed anosmia no matter what remedy they tried or did not try?)

  7. Red Wine Buzz,
Look at you fancy pants, I need all the information before I form an opinion...sheesh, can't you just react to headlines like the rest of us?! (Wink) You are right and I should have included more information in this post, I just freaked at the idea of losing one's sense of smell....thought better safe than sorry. Thank you for bringing a rational response and more level, and fair head.

  8. Hey.... I threw out my bottle as soon as I read the news ;)

But then I had some second thoughts and all that schoolin' kicked in and I started to run some rough numbers through my desiccated cortex.

But since it's harder these days to make child support, student loans and rent as a doctor in Khaleefohneea, I'm putting a few eggs in the wine writing basket and thought it would be pretty lame to dash my chances over a few days of nasal congestion.
