Classic..

Val,
I have to say that I think Ron has one of the best and most balanced palates in the wine industry, have no idea where that Sangiovese Rose shit came from however. Even now when I look at that I can't stop myself from saying, "Sangiovese Rose?! Are you fucking kidding me?!". I guess even brilliant men are subject to bad judgement, hell he seems to like me so something has to be a little tweaked in that melon of his. Have a great tasting, kinda curious, what ya pouring?Samantha Duganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05214278596698698245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819829113979242722.post-88020774575549316382012-05-20T08:41:55.831-07:002012-05-20T08:41:55.831-07:00Funny, I was just thinking that about "Rosato...Funny, I was just thinking that about "Rosato" - had more than enough "il plonko rosa" put in front of me in my Italian wine classes - always Sangiovese, always spitworthy. I'm actually teaching a class on Rose' wines this Wednesday, and yes, there is a Rosato in the mix - but it is from Yalumba - it will be interesting to see what the Aussies have done with the "King of the Tuscan Grapes." I hope the French or the Navarra in the line up will help cleanse a few palates of the sweet-pink-blush stains.Val https://www.blogger.com/profile/17756024122711114873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819829113979242722.post-13151559381163814562012-05-18T10:16:33.345-07:002012-05-18T10:16:33.345-07:00Great fun!

Sparkling wines and not Champagne, and as I said in this piece, I don't care for sparkling wines. The only dig I ever make about California sparklers is their high-end stuff is way, way over priced.

Where the hell did everyone go?! Have they grown bored with us Love? Hey....maybe now we can talk dirty and no one will see! If you recall I spent a week last year in ...Thomas,
If you recall I spent a week last year in Friuli so trust me, I've tasted those reds and adore them, especially Schioppettino, and have continued my exploration of Northern Italian wines since being back...so into those right now.

Of course Ron is wrong about Rose, although my first love with Rose will always be those from Provence so I do agree with him there but Sangiovese? Come now. Thank you for helping me point out where he is wrong. Cute as hell but dead wrong on Pinot Rose.

Ah yes, terroir. Was going to say it but didn't want to hear from the jackholes that think it's all false. Is there perceptible terroir everywhere? Nope. But is it noticeable in some places? Hell yes. I know it to be true and until you can find me a Sauvignon Blanc that tastes like Sancerre, (oh and did you know they make some seriously beautiful Rose there as well?) or a Chardonnay that tastes like Chablis, I will continue to say it.Samantha Duganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05214278596698698245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819829113979242722.post-90658964782165561232012-05-16T09:07:56.096-07:002012-05-16T09:07:56.096-07:00Webb,

That town smells.

Thomas,

Calling me clueless borders on the jejune, and here we are in mahmay. Blah, blah, blah about Sancerre Rose. As I said, I might concede that there are a FEW Roses from Sancerre that are lovely, but, on the whole, I find the category pretty insipid. There are also some damned good California sparkling wines, which Samantha probably wouldn't concede. That's the thing about wine, we are always wrong when we generalize. But it makes for better copy.

My Gorgeous Samantha,

Better to get hung up on my premature engorgement.

Yes, I know, I'm weird.

I love you!Ron Washam, HMWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11238869156614617705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819829113979242722.post-37608992428506997752012-05-16T08:47:22.761-07:002012-05-16T08:47:22.761-07:00Sam,

Preferring appellations is ok with me; it's far more specific than saying that you like Italian wine.

Incidentally, Friuli is SUPREME!

Have you tasted any Schioppettino or Refosco (reds from the region)?

Oh, get yourself a taste of Alto Adige wines, especially the whites but also interesting, light Pinot Nero.

Speaking of Pinot Noir and Rose, the Hosemaster hasn't a clue: Sancerre pinks are fabulous, as are other Loire pinks. I do agree with him, however, about the Grenache/Mourvedre rose connection--equally fantastic, but different.

And just to make a point about what you call "Italian Rose." Ever tried any from the Italy's southern regions?

Re, salt taste in Champagne: I've always attributed that sensation to a streak of minerality that runs through the wines, put there by the chalky soils of the region (but that would mean the terroir put the sensation into the wine, and we know from all the couch experts that could not be possible).Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07322028233207741737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819829113979242722.post-40892121633949925572012-05-15T19:57:58.206-07:002012-05-15T19:57:58.206-07:00Carolyn,
